The short version
Steam goes through the plant. What condenses is the hydrolat.
Fresh pine needles, mint leaves, lavender flowers. Steam is passed through them, and as that steam cools it is collected as water. That water carries the water soluble compounds of the plant and its soft, natural scent: everything gentle about the plant, none of the harshness.
Essential oils are the other half of that same distillation. They are concentrated and have to be diluted before they touch skin. A hydrolat is already the right strength.
Straight onto skin
No dilution, no carrier oil, no patch of maths. Mist it on, let it dry down, moisturise over it.
Safe in the ladle water
A capful in the bucket scents the round. Because it is water based it behaves like the rest of your ladle water, unlike neat essential oil on hot stones.
Live product, short life
No preservative, so it goes in the fridge once opened and gets used within six months. That is the trade for having nothing else in the bottle.

Yes. That is the point of it. Mist from about twenty centimetres, keep it away from your eyes, and let it dry down before moisturiser. Patch test on your inner arm first if your skin is reactive.
A capful in the ladle bucket, not neat on the stones. Because a hydrolat is water based it behaves like the rest of your ladle water. Neat essential oil can flash or spit on hot stones, which is exactly what this avoids.
There is no preservative in the bottle, so keep it refrigerated once opened and use it within six months. Before opening, store it somewhere cool and dark. Cold from the fridge is also how it feels best between rounds.
Not the wormwood or sage waters, including the Wormwood, Mint & Sage blend. Pine, Pine Buds, Walnut and Mint are milder, but check with your midwife or doctor first if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
