Why plant water and not oil

Every distillation makes two things. The essential oil floats off the top, and underneath it sits the water that the steam passed through. For a long time that water was the thing thrown away. It is the gentler half: the water soluble compounds, the soft end of the scent, and a strength that skin can take without any dilution at all.

That makes it the right thing to reach for in a sauna. Nothing to measure, nothing to carry an oil in, nothing that spits on a hot stone.

How it is made

Fresh plant material goes into the still: pine needles cut that week, mint leaves, walnut leaf, sage from the bed. Steam is passed through it slowly, and the condensate is collected and bottled in amber glass. Nothing is added afterwards. No perfume, no alcohol, no filler, and no preservative, which is why every bottle goes in the fridge once it is opened.

Batches are small because the plant material decides the size. Pine Buds is the clearest example: the buds are only worth gathering for a few weeks each spring, so when that batch is gone it is gone until the next one.

Where it is used

The range was built for sauna. Between rounds, after the cold water, and a capful in the ladle bucket for a scented round. But most bottles end up being used more at home than in the barrel: a morning face mist, a pillow spray, something to reach for after the sea.
